Teach For America: Progress or Scandal Debate

Part One: Looking at Pros and Cons
General Overview of Teach For America
Teach for America is a program that recruits young (sometimes older) and talented people, usually right out of college and places them in poor, underprivileged, and ‘at-risk’ urban and rural schools that are struggling. One of the main missions of Teach for America (TFA) is to help close the academic achievement gap between the affluent and underprivileged. This is a very elite and competitive program which only accepts about 10-20 percent of their applicants. They require a two year comment and will help pay off college loans, much like AmeriCorps, or help pay to further ones education. However, there is a lot of controversy over the practices and ethics of this organization. In fact, many in higher education and professional educational fields have huge objections and moral problems with how TFA practices and conducts itself in the field of education; many professionals feel they are doing more harm than good.
I hope to address some of these concerns through a series of hubs because I have yet to see a forum that directly and honestly discuses not only the impact TFA is having in the public/charter school classrooms but also the implications programs like TFA have for students, teachers, administrators, politicians, business leaders and the general public. These hubs are not in support nor are they an attack on TFA; rather they are designed to be a teachable moment through discussion and understanding.

Teach For America Chews Up, Spits Out Another Ethnic-Studies Major

February 16, 2005 | ISSUE 46•26 ISSUE 41•07
NEW YORK—Teach For America, a national program that recruits recent college graduates to teach in low-income rural and urban communities, has devoured another ethnic-studies major, 24-year-old Andy Cuellen reported Tuesday.
Enlarge ImageCuellen stands in front of the elementary school where he used to teach.
"Look, the world is a miserable place," said Cuellen, a Dartmouth graduate who quit the TFA program Monday morning. "All people—even children—are just nasty animals trying to secure their share of the food supply. I don't care how poor or how rich you are, that's just a fact. I'm sorry, but I have better things to do than zoo-keep for peanuts."
Just one of the 12,000 young people TFA has burned through since 1990, Cuellen was given five weeks of training the summer before he took over a classroom at P.S. 83 in the South Bronx last September.
"I walked into that school actually thinking I could make a difference," said Cuellen, who taught an overflowing class of disadvantaged 8-year-olds. "It was trial by fire. But after five months spent in a stuffy, dark room where the chalkboard fell off the wall every two days, corralling screaming kids into broken desks, I'm burnt to a crisp."
Cuellen said his TFA experience "taught him a lot about hopelessness."
"The cities are fucked. The suburbs are fucked. The whole country is fucked," Cuellen said. "And there's not a goddamned thing you or anyone can do about it. Anyone who says otherwise is selling something. Or trying to get you to teach kids math."
According to Dartmouth literature, as a member of the ethnic-studies department, Cuellen learned "to empower students of color to move beyond being objects of study toward being subjects of their own social realities, with voices of their own."
Teach For America executive director Theo Anderson called ethnic-studies departments "a prime source of fodder."
"Oh, I'd say we burn through a hundred or so ethnic-studies majors each year," said Anderson, pointing to a series of charts showing the college-major breakdown of TFA corps members. "They tend to last a little longer than women's studies majors and art-therapy students, but Cuellen got mashed to a pulp pretty quickly. It usually takes ethnic-studies majors another year to realize that they're wasting their precious youth on a Sisyphean endeavor."

How Republicans Can Crack Americorps Scandal

What's next in the budding scandal over President Obama's abrupt firing of Gerald Walpin, the inspector general of AmeriCorps?

Republican investigators on Capitol Hill know one thing very well.  As minorities in both House and Senate, they have no power to compel the White House to disclose anything.  And majority Democrats, at least for now, are not inclined to help the opposition uncover embarrassing facts about one of President Obama's favorite federal programs.

So Republicans are brainstorming things they can do by themselves to shake loose information from an administration that has no obligation to cooperate with them. And indeed, there are a few ways.

Leipzig Connection Systematic Destruction of American Education
Excerpt:

Description

This is Paolo Lionni's shocking book The Leipzig Connection - Systematic Destruction of American Education (1993) which exposes the baneful influence of German psycholgist Wilhelm Wunt who with Rockefeller funding pioneered the concept of "mankind as a biochemical machine" that eventually brought a ruin to American education as some today can't even read and write after they finish school. The history of modern psychology begins with Wilhelm Wundt and the University of Leipzig in Germany. Wundt's theories changed the view of man as possessing a "mind" or "soul" to one of man seen as an animal, subject only to stimulus-response factors. Since then modern psychology has more and more aligned with the behaviorist view of man as a beast to be controlled by placing him in suitable controlled environments. Education, according to Wundt, was the subjecting the student to the proper "experiences" by which to form his identity and behavior. It eventually led to Pavlov, Stalin and Chinese Communist brainwashing. By 1892, the stage was set for the propagation of Wundt's laboratory psychology into American education. The first generation of Wundtian teachers founded "modern" departments of psychology all over the Western world, especially in America, aimed at submerging the student into the social organism. It was a perfect fit for the growing collectivist mentality and the centralizing of government, both in Europe and America. Man is an animal, whose actions are always reactions. He has no freewill or self-determinism. Education therefore is the art of giving and withholding stimuli. The primary categories are not right and wrong, but feeling good and feeling bad. It leads to a society of gratification, not of reason and responsibility. One is to adapt to one's environment, not change the environment ethically for one's own and society's benefit. Students were divided into those few who would receive an academic education, and the many who would go to vocational schools. Lionni does a clear and crisp job of explaining this bit of history from the Liepzig school of psychology, its importation to America and the connecting with the Rockefeller fortune which set Wundt's ideas on the road to controlling American education - the new "science" of education. There was some good on-the-ground science in the project, but the secular philosophy by which the science was given meaning and interpretation was a disaster. American education has been taken over by charlatans with no interest in education, only in control, with the militant secularist movement so enormously successful in commandeering education for its own evil mind-control purposes. This fascinating book tells the tale of the takeover by government centralizers, those who believe that they have the answers to life's problems and plan to impose them on the rest of us. The imposition naturally requires the control of peoples' thinking, otherwise people begin to catch on that they are being systematically deceived and betrayed. The Leipzig Connection is the complete book with documented details and facts about the scam known as modern education and psychology which eventually came so far to predominate in modern education. Find out who exactly were the people responsible behind the condition of today's educational system and how come you weren't taught anything especially useful in all those years sitting in school's benches. Perhaps you simply weren't supposed to. 115 pages, some pictures. A must read for everyone.
