Does your government have an Internet kill-switch? Read our guide to Guerrilla Networking and be prepared for when the lines get cut.

505
These days, no popular movement goes without an Internet presence of some kind, whether it's organizing on Facebook or spreading the word through Twitter. And as we've seen in Egypt, that means that your Internet connection can be the first to go. Whether you're trying to check in with your family, contact your friends, or simply spread the word, here are a few ways to build some basic network connectivity when you can't rely on your cellular or landline Internet connections.

Do-It-Yourself Internet With Ad-Hoc Wi-Fi

Even if you've managed to find an Internet connection for yourself, it won't be that helpful in reaching out to your fellow locals if they can't get online to find you. If you're trying to coordinate a group of people in your area and can't rely on an Internet connection, cell phones, or SMS, your best bet could be a wireless mesh network of sorts–essentially, a distributed network of wireless networking devices that can all find each other and communicate with each other. Even if none of those devices have a working Internet connection, they can still find each other, which, if your network covers the city you're in, might be all you need. At the moment, wireless mesh networking isn't really anywhere close to market-ready, though we have seen an implementation of the 802.11s draft standard, which extends the 802.11 Wi-Fi standard to include wireless mesh networking, in the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) XO laptop.
However, a prepared guerrilla networker with a handful of PCs could make good use of Daihinia ($25, 30-day free trial), an app that piggybacks on your Wi-Fi adapter driver to turn your normal ad-hoc Wi-Fi network into a multihop ad-hoc network (disclaimer: we haven't tried this ourselves yet), meaning that instead of requiring each device on the network to be within range of the original access point, you simply need to be within range of a device on the network that has Daihinia installed, effectively allowing you to add a wireless mesh layer to your ad-hoc network.
Advanced freedom fighters can set up a portal Web page on their network that explains the way the setup works, with Daihinia instructions and a local download link so they can spread the network even further. Lastly, just add a Bonjour-compatible chat client like Pidgin or iChat, and you'll be able to talk to your neighbors across the city without needing an Internet connection.

Back to Basics

Remember when you stashed your old modems in the closet because you thought you might need them some day? In the event of a total communications blackout–as we're seeing in Egypt, for example–you'll be glad you did. Older and simpler tools, like dial-up Internet or even ham radio, could still work, since these "abandoned" tech avenues aren't being policed nearly as hard.
In order to get around the total shutdown of all of the ISPs within Egypt, several international ISPs are offering dial-up access to the Internet to get protesters online, since phone service is still operational. It's slow, but it still works–the hard part is getting the access numbers without an Internet connection to find them.
212Unfortunately, such dial-up numbers can also be fairly easily shut down by the Egyptian government, so you could also try returning to FidoNet–a distributed networking system for BBSes that was popular in the 1980s. FidoNet is limited to sending only simple text messages, and it's slow, but it has two virtues: Users connect asynchronously, so the network traffic is harder to track, and any user can act as the server, which means that even if the government shuts down one number in the network, another one can quickly pop up to take its place.
You could also take inspiration from groups that are working to create an ad-hoc communications network into and out of Egypt using Ham Radio, since the signals are rarely tracked and extremely hard to shut down or block. Most of these efforts are still getting off the ground, but hackers are already cobbling together ways to make it a viable form of communication into and out of the country.

Always Be Prepared

In the land of no Internet connection, the man with dial-up is king. Here are a few gadgets that you could use to prepare for the day they cut the lines.
Given enough time and preparation, your ham radio networks could even be adapted into your own ad-hoc network using Packet Radio, a radio communications protocol that you can use to create simple long-distance wireless networks to transfer text and other messages between computers. Packet Radio is rather slow and not particularly popular (don't try to stream any videos with this, now), but it's exactly the kind of networking device that would fly under the radar.
135In response to the crisis in Egypt, nerds everywhere have risen to call for new and exciting tools for use in the next government-mandated shutdown. Bre Pettis, founder of the hackerspace NYC Resistor and creator of the Makerbot 3D printer, has called for "Apps for the Appocalypse," including a quick and easy way to set up chats on a local network so you can talk with your friends and neighbors in an emergency even without access to the Internet. If his comments are any indication, Appocalypse apps may be headed your way soon.
Tons of cool tech are also just waiting to be retrofitted for these purposes. David Dart's Pirate Box is a one-step local network in a box originally conceived for file sharing and local P2P purposes, but it wouldn't take much work to adapt the Pirate Box as a local networking tool able to communicate with other pirate boxes to form a compact, mobile set of local networks in the event of an Internet shutdown.
Whether you're in Egypt or Eagle Rock, you rely on your Internet access to stay in touch with friends and family, get your news, and find information you need. (And read PCWorld, of course.) Hopefully with these apps, tools, and techniques, you won't have to worry about anyone–even your government–keeping you from doing just that.
Patrick Miller hopes he isn't first against the wall when the revolution comes. Find him on Twitter or Facebook–if you have a working Internet connection, anyway.
David Daw is an accidental expert in ad-hoc networks since his apartment gets no cell reception. Find him on Twitter or send him a ham radio signal.

Yahoo Mail blamed for Windows Phone 7 'phantom data' leak

Some mobiles running Windows Phone 7 have been the victim of a 'phantom data leak', with phones chugging down 3G data even when they're not supposed to. Microsoft has admitted there is a problem, which was causing many WP7 users to rattle through their data allowances in no time at all, CNET News reported last month.
Now the company has revealed that Yahoo Mail is to blame. The software giant told Windows Phone Secrets that there's an "inefficiency" in the way the Windows Phone email client syncs with Yahoo Mail. That's a polite way of saying data has been going astray.
Don't worry though -- Microsoft has the solution. It's worked together with Yahoo to fix the problem, with an update due in the next few weeks that will stop your precious Internets leaking out into the atmosphere.
For now though, if you need to put a stop to dribbling data, you can go to the Windows Phone 7 settings menu and switch the 'download new content' option to manual, and changing the 'download email from' settings to 'the last seven days.'
Fingers crossed that should sort the issue while Microsoft and Yahoo work furiously through the night cobbling together a fix.

Collected papers and posthumous publications
Carson bequeathed her manuscripts and papers to Yale University, to take advantage of the new state-of-the-art preservations facilities of the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library. Her longtime agent and literary executor Marie Rodell spent nearly two years organizing and cataloging Carson's papers and correspondence, distributing all the letters to their senders so that only what each correspondent approved of would be submitted to the archive.[60]
In 1965, Rodell arranged for the publication of an essay Carson had intended to expand into a book: A Sense of Wonder. The essay, which was combined with photographs by Charles Pratt and others, exhorts parents to help their children experience the "lasting pleasures of contact with the natural world", which "are available to anyone who will place himself under the influence of earth, sea and sky and their amazing life."[61]
In addition to the letters in Always Rachel, in 1998 a volume of Carson's previously unpublished work was published as Lost Woods: The Discovered Writing of Rachel Carson, edited by Linda Lear. All of Carson's books remain in print.[61]

profiles of insecticides found in products registered by the US EPA
Why do you need this 150 page book?
~ Most insecticides have neurotoxic active ingredients that can affect non-target populations. This information may not be on the product's label

~ Pets and people may suffer adverse effects from repeated exposures due to multiple pesticide applications, perhaps involving different pesticide products used in different locations for a variety of purposes.

~ Chemicals that are cholinesterase inhibitors, such as carbamates and organophosphates, can have additive toxicity. These comprise 36% of the insecticides profiled and are used in various household products.

~ Pesticide labels usually lack information on carcinogenicity. 44% of the chemicals profiled are probable or possible carcinogens according to the EPA.

~ Pesticides sprayed on yards for flea and tick control can volatize into the air or run off into streams and rivers, affecting non-target organisms such as birds, fish, crustaceans, aquatic invertebrates, bees, and other wildlife.

~ Water treatment facilities do not routinely remove chemical pesticides when they process waste water.

SCALAR
What happened to Katrina? After studying satellite images of large weather systems with “deleted” sections, and telltale “scalar” imprints of oddly shaped and aligned clouds, Northwest news affiliate meteorologist Scott Stevens was sure the weather was being deliberately manipulated. With 72-hour forecasts persistently and wildly wrong across the USA, this veteran TV weatherman was convinced that sophisticated forecasting models were not accounting for “artificial weather” betraying the “hand of man” in formerly natural processes.
Stevens began using “scalar weapons signatures” to improve his forecasting record. There was no question in his mind that the storms he was seeing were being “altered and guided to their final destinations. Is there some combination of chemtrails and scalar weapons at work to control earth’s weather?” he wondered. [urbansurvival.com; weatherwars.info; coasttocoastam.com ]
Did the latest weather modifying technology involve electromagnetic force?

FOOLING WITH FRANCES

Stevens was on to something.
On the morning of September 5, 2004, WFOR-TV reporter Dave Malkoff had been on hurricane watch at Juno Beach just north of West Palm Beach, Florida when he was drawn to something on the water. Frances was coming in at a walk as Malkoff strode to the water’s edge to get a closer look
“Gel foam down here on the ocean,” Malkoff told viewers. “Once these waves crash, you’re going to see something interesting. Once the waves crash they instantly mix with foam-watch! That’s the foam right there. And it instantly turns into like a foam that you would have in your bathtub, and it blows away like a solid. Instantly, this foam that’s coming off the ocean mixes with the sand and is blowing down this way.”
Whatever he was seeing was too thick for familiar ocean foam. Confirmation came later that morning when a CBS-affiliate reported from Pompano Beach: “White foam all across the water. And it is not blowing away.”
Three years before, on July 19, 2001, ABC News had reported similar gelatinous goo washing up on beaches in West Palm Beach. Identified as Dyn-O-Gel, this air-dropped desiccant had been designed by the Dyn-O-Mat Corporation of West Palm Beach to dry up hurricanes and dial them down. [moonbowmedia.com]

Chemtrail Illnesses

Such programs as geo-engineering are being conducted by government-affiliated universities, government agencies, and on a mass scale through chemtrail spraying by "shooting pollution particles into the upper atmosphere to reflect the sun's rays.
The Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Program was created in 1989 with funding from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and is sponsored by the DOE's Office of Science and managed by the Office of Biological and Environmental Research.
One of ARM's programs, entitled Indirect and Semi-Direct Aerosol Campaign (ISDAC), is aimed at measuring "cloud simulations" and "aerosol retrievals".
Another program under the Department of Energy's Atmospheric Science Program is directed towards, "developing comprehensive understanding of the atmospheric processes that control the transport, transformation, and fate of energy related trace chemicals and particulate matter."The DOE website states that, "The current focus of the program is aerosol radiative forcing of climate: aerosol formation and evolution and aerosol properties that affect direct and indirect influences on climate and climate change."In other words:"Spraying aluminum powder and barium oxide into high levels of the atmosphere, again delivered by aircraft, to increase planetary reflectance (albedo) and cloud cover." To reduce Global Warming(which is a hoax).
High levels of barium have been found in substances associated with chemtrails.
Reports of chemtrails, jet plumes emitted from planes that hang in the air for hours and do not dissipate, often blanketing the sky in criss-cross patterns, have increased dramatically over the last 10 years.
Many have speculated that they are part of a government program to alter climate, inoculate humans against certain pathogens, or even to toxify humans as part of a population reduction agenda and with everything I have studied over the last year, I would tend to agree with that last part once you see the bigger picture.

[2]

Project Dyn-O-Storm

According to Dyn-O-Mat®, the company and "its team of experts have developed a proprietary blend of formulated polymers that have undergone intense laboratory study and actual testing. They believe that if they deliver their formulated polymer via jet aircraft into the outer bank of a hurricane working their way into the eye cutting a pie shape piece out of the storm it should cause the winds and the strength of the storm to diminish. The polymers will be delivered into storms via jet aircraft with specialized disbursement systems.
"In early 2001 Dyn-O-Mat®, utilizing a Canberra Jet, dispersed a nominal amount of its formulated polymer into a building thunderstorm off the coast of Florida. The result was that the thunderstorm was removed from Doppler radar. This was verified by the Palm Beach International Airport traffic controllers and local media weather stations.
"Additionally, Dyn-O-Mat® holds a U. S. Patent for the disbursement of their formulated polymers into clouds thereby giving them the opportunity to alter weather." [3]

Patent

Patent Application No. 598660 filed June 21, 2000: "A method for artificially modifying the weather by seeding rain clouds of a storm with suitable cross-linked aqueous polymer. The polymer is dispersed into the cloud and the wind of the storm agitates the mixture causing the polymer to absorb the rain. This reaction forms a gelatinous substance which precipitate to the surface below. Thus, diminishing the clouds ability to rain." [4]

Since then, cloud seeding has been used to create rain, and was used in China to reduce air pollution during the 2008 Olympic Games.
There have been accusations of "stealing rain" due to cloud seeding. In Vietnam it was used by the U. S. Air Force to extend the monsoon season: "Make mud, not war." Liquid carbon dioxide has been used to remove fog from airports. The Russians used cloud seeding to create rainfall to keep radioactive fallout from the Chernobyl nuclear disaster from spreading to Moscow.

Project Popeye was an experiment in increased rainfall through cloud seeding jointly approved by the U.S. Department of State and U.S. Department of Defense. The technical aspects of the experiment were verified by Dr. Donald F. Hornig, Special Assistant to the President of the United States for Science and Technology. The government of Laos was not informed of the project, its methods or its goals.
Robert S. McNamara, U.S. Secretary of Defense, was aware that there might be objections raised by the international scientific community but said in a memo to the president that such objections had not in the past been a basis for prevention of military activities considered to be in the interests of U.S. national security.
During October 1966, Project Popeye was tested in a strip of the Laos panhandle east of the Bolovens Plateau in the Se Kong River valley. The test was conducted by personnel from the Naval Ordnance Test Station located at China Lake California. Fifty cloud seeding experiments were conducted with the result that 82% of the clouds produced rain within a brief period after having been seeded. It was claimed that one of the clouds drifted across the Vietnam border and dropped nine inches of rain on a US special forces camp over a four hour period. After the successful completion of the test phase, Project Popeye transitioned from an experiment to an operational program of the U.S. Defense department.

During his years at ASRC, in addition to the NSI summer programs, Schaefer led annual research expeditions to Yellowstone National Park for atmospheric scientists to work in the outdoor laboratory it provided each January. In the 1970s Schaefer's own research interests focused on solar energy, aerosols, gases, air quality, and pollution particles in the atmosphere. His work in some of these areas culminated in a three-part report on Air Quality on the Global Scale in 1978. In addition, during the 1970s Schaefer was an instructor in the American Association for the Advancement of Science Chautauqua short courses for science teachers.

Case Orange ties a 1996 report by top military personnel in the U.S., “Weather as a Force Multiplier: Owning the Weather in 2025” [19] to evidentiary details (like governmental spraying schedules, chemical orders, correct nomenclature used in airline operating manuals, and calls for geoengineering by economists) to support its notion of “heavy involvement of governments at top level in climate control projects.”
Owning the Weather in 2025 provides a specific timeline for the use of EnMod technologies in cooperation with the Weather Modification Association (WMA), a business-government group promoting the beneficial uses of environmental modification [20]:
2000 Introduce ionic mirrors, with a sharp increase from 2008;
2000-2025 Use chemicals for atmospheric seeding by civilian (as well as military) aviation;
2004 Create smart clouds thru nanotechnology, with exponential increase after 2010;
2005 Introduce ‘carbon black dust’.
Though Case Orange decries the paucity of research into EnMod, in 2009 Weather Modification Assn. published its position statement on the safety of seeding clouds with silver-iodide, citing three dozen research papers from 1970 through 2006. [21]

Project Censored 1995: The Pentagon’s Mysterious HAARP Project

EXCERPT: “For a project whose backers hail it as a major scientific feat, HAARP has remained extremely low-profile-almost unknown to most Alaskans, and the rest of the country. HAARP surfaced publicly in Alaska in the spring of 1993, when the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) began advising commercial pilots on how to avoid the large amount of intentional (and some unintentional) electromagnetic radiation that HAARP would generate. Despite protests of FAA engineers and Alaska bush pilots, the final Environmental Impact Statement gave HAARP the green light.

While a November 1993 “HAARP Fact Sheet” released to the public by the Office of Naval Research stressed only the civilian and scientific aspects of the project, an earlier, 1990, Air Force-Navy document, acquired by Earth Island Journal, listed only military experiments for the HAARP project. Scientists, environmentalists, and native people are concerned that HAARP’s electronic transmitters could harm people, endanger wildlife, and trigger unforeseen environmental impacts. Inupiat tribal advisor Charles Etok Edwardsen, Jr., wrote President Clinton on behalf of the Inupiat Community of the Arctic Slope and the Kasigluk Elders Conference expressing their concern with the prospect of altering the earth’s neutral atmospheric properties.

HAARP also may violate the 1977 Environmental Modification Convention (ratified by the U.S. in 1979), which bans “military or any other hostile use of environmental modification techniques having widespread, long-lasting, or severe effects.” HAARP project manager John Heckscher, a scientist at the Air Force’s Phillips Laboratory, has called concerns about the transmitter’s impact unfounded. “It’s not unreasonable to expect that something three times more powerful than anything that’s previously been built might have unforeseen effects,” Heckscher told Microwave News. “But that’s why we do environmental impact statements.” [emphasis added]

Weather Engineering in China – Technology Review, MIT 3/25/08

EXCERPTS: “To prevent rain over the roofless 91,000-seat Olympic stadium that Beijing natives have nicknamed the Bird’s Nest, the city’s branch of the national Weather Modification Office–itself a department of the larger China Meteorological Administration–has prepared a three-stage program for the 2008 Olympics this August.”
“First, Beijing’s Weather Modification Office will track the region’s weather via satellites, planes, radar, and an IBM p575 supercomputer, purchased from Big Blue last year, that executes 9.8 trillion floating point operations per second. It models an area of 44,000 square kilometers (17,000 square miles) accurately enough to generate hourly forecasts for each kilometer.  Then, using their two aircraft and an array of twenty artillery and rocket-launch sites around Beijing, the city’s weather engineers will shoot and spray silver iodide and dry ice into incoming clouds that are still far enough away that their rain can be flushed out before they reach the stadium.  Finally, any rain-heavy clouds that near the Bird’s Nest will be seeded with chemicals to shrink droplets so that rain won’t fall until those clouds have passed over. Zhang Qian, head of Beijing’s Weather Modification Office, explains, “We use a coolant made from liquid nitrogen to increase the number of droplets while decreasing their average size. As a result, the smaller droplets are less likely to fall, and precipitation can be reduced.” August is part of Northeast Asia’s rainy season; chances of precipitation over Beijing on any day that month will approach 50 percent. Still, while tests with clouds bearing heavy rain loads haven’t always been successful, Qian claims that “the results with light rain have been satisfactory.”….
The Chinese began experimental weather engineering in 1958 to irrigate the country’s north, where average yearly rainfall compares with that during the American Dust Bowl of the 1930s, and sudden windstorms blasting down from the Gobi desert have made drought and famine constant possibilities. Today, the People’s Republic budgets $60 to $90 million annually for its national Weather Modification Office. As for the return on this investment, the state-run news agency Xinhua claims that between 1999 and 2007, the office rendered 470,000 square kilometers of land hail-free and created more than 250 billion tons of rain–an amount sufficient to fill the Yellow River, China’s second largest, four times over. Furthermore, while Qian’s weather engineers in Beijing have been testing their capabilities for the past two years, the Chinese say that during the past five years, similar efforts have already helped produce good weather at national events like the World Expo in Yunnan, the Asian Games in Shanghai, and the Giant Panda Festival in Sichuan.”
“Although they possess the world’s largest weather modification program, the Chinese point to the Russians as being the most advanced. In 1986, Russian scientists deployed cloud-seeding measures to prevent radioactive rain from Chernobyl from reaching Moscow, and in 2000 they cleared clouds before an anniversary ceremony commemorating the end of World War II; China’s then president, Jiang Zemin, witnessed the results firsthand and pushed to adopt the same approach back home. As for the historical credit for starting the whole weather-engineering ball rolling back in 1946, that belongs to employees of General Electric in Schenectady, NY–most notably, scientist Bernard Vonnegut (brother of the late novelist Kurt), who worked out silver iodide’s potential to provide crystals around which cloud moisture would condense. During the 1960s and ’70s, the United States invested millions of federal dollars in experiments like Stormfury (aimed at hurricane control), Skywater (aimed at snow- and rainfall increase), and Skyfire (aimed at lightning suppression). Simultaneously, the U.S. military tried to use weather modification as a weapon in Project Popeye, during the Vietnam War, by rain-making over the Ho Chi Minh Trail in an effort to close it.”

Dry Ice is a rainmaker with cloud seeding

EXCERPT:
Dry Ice for Cloud SeedingCloud seeding with dry ice was discovered accidentally in a General Electric laboratory in New York. In 1946, GE chemist Vincent Schaefer caused a snowfall near Schenectady, NY, by dumping six pounds of dry ice from an airplane.
Continental Carbonic Products sells carbon dioxide pellets and liquid carbon dioxide which can be used in cloud seeding operations.

Depleted Uranium a tool to depopulate the world
by Sepp Hasslberger
Sunday Apr 9th, 2006 1:32 PM
War, Epidemics, Depopulation - Rough Times Ahead Having read this article of Justin Raimondo yesterday, I caught a glimpse of a vision of destruction. Something that might await us just around the bend, like starting in less than two-weeks' time, when Iran is scheduled to open their new oil bourse where black gold will be traded in Euro, not in Dollars.
If you consider the dangers of man made pandemics, such as AIDS and the successor to last year's SARS, the Bird Flu, the scourge of depleted uranium or even just of the normal application of pharmaceutical medicine, which has become one of the major causes of death, it does not take a vivid imagination to see destruction awaiting a significant part of the planet's population...

... unless, of course, we should manage to wake up in time and take back control from those who would lead us to the brink of extinction to forward their policy objective of a marked reduction in population numbers.

Think about it.

That was exactly what Carlyle spokesman Christopher Ullman had told me. He also admitted that Carlyle would land a $1bn investment if the proposal was accepted. After I reported these facts, Ullman even called to thank me for quoting him accurately. So when I heard about Carlyle's about-face, I called Ullman to see what was up. I felt like I was talking to one of the brainwashed characters in The Manchurian Candidate, the Jonathan Demme remake about a Carlyle-esque company that conspires to put a mind-controlled candidate in the Oval Office. "We learned today that we did not even join the consortium," Ullman told me. "When I spoke to you yesterday, I did not know that." Amazingly, it worked. The story - which made front-page news around the world - vanished.

TAVISTOCK - THE BEST KEPT SECRET IN AMERICA

Formed in 1947, the Tavistock Institute is an independent not-for-profit organization which seeks to combine research in the social sciences with professional practice. Problems of institution-building and organizational design and change are being tackled in all sectors - government, industry and commerce, health and welfare, education, etc. - nationally and internationally, and clients range from multinationals to small community groups. A growth area has been the use of a developmental approach to evaluation of new and experimental programs, particularly in health, education and community development. This has also produced new training events alongside the regular program of group relations conferences. The Institute owns and edits the monthly journal Human Relations (published by Plenum Press) which is now in its 48th year, and has recently launched (in conjunction with Sage Publications) a new journal Evaluation.

Three elements combine to make the Institute unusual, if not unique: it has the independence of being entirely self-financing, with no subsidies from the government or other sources; the action research orientation places it between, but not in, the worlds of academia and consultancy; and its range of disciplines include anthropology, economics, organizational behavior, political science, psychoanalysis, psychology and sociology.
